Awards & Accomplishments

Emeritus Professor Bruce Overmier is this year's winner of the D. O. Hebb Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.  Bruce was selected from among seven nominees.  Bruce will be presented with the award at the APA convention and will deliver the Hebb lecture. The meeting will be held in Toronto, Canada from August 6-9.

Here is more information about the award: The D. O. Hebb Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award honors a psychologist who has made distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in behavioral neuroscience and/or comparative psychology. The candidate does not have to be a member of Division 6, but is expected to present the D. O. Hebb Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award Lecture at the 2015 APA Convention.

Congratulations to Bruce on this well-deserved honor!

Emeritus Professor Irving Gottesman has been honored with the 2015 CLA Alumni of Notable Achievement (ANA) award. The CLA Alumni of Notable Achievement (ANA) program was created in 1994 as part of the college's 125th anniversary to celebrate and honor the significant achievements and contributions of its alumni. All ANA honorees have been nominated by CLA alumni, faculty, and staff. Of the college's 120,000 living graduates, approximately 1,300 have been selected as recipients. By honoring its alumni, the college recognizes and celebrates not only their singular accomplishments but also the collective depth and breadth of their interests, talents, career paths and achievements in all sectors of society.

Professor Deniz Ones co-authored an American Psychological Association article titled “Study: Older Workers Bring Valuable Knowledge to the Job - But Younger Workers Display Superior Reasoning Abilities”. The article can be found online here.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Moin Syed in our Counseling Psychology area, who has just been awarded an Arthur "Red" Motley Exemplary Teaching Award for 2014-15. Moin received inspirational letters from his current and former students in support of his nomination for the award. We are enormously proud of his achievements as a teacher and mentor.

Assistant Professor Moin Syed has also been elected as President of the Society for Research on Identity Formation (SRIF). SRIF is the premier international society for the study of identity development. Dr. Syed will begin his two-year term as President-elect in May 2015, followed by two years as President from 2017-2019.

The Department of Psychology is very pleased to announce that two of our junior honors majors, Erin Begnel and Manju Connolly, were awarded the prestigious College of Liberal Arts Talle Family Scholarship for 2015-16.  Talle Family Scholars exemplify what a liberal arts education makes possible and provide powerful evidence that CLA is a destination college for talented, motivated students. Only ten awards were made across the College. The awardees receive full tuition scholarships to support them in their senior year. Congratulations Erin and Manju!
